from Rita Half blog, half TV recap, today I'm going to talk to you about the greatest plotline that ever existed in comedy TV. You know what I'm talking about... Clothes. (Treat yo' self.) Fragrances. (Treat yo' self.) Massages. (Treat yo' self.) Mimosas. (Treat yo' self.) Fiiiiine leather goods. (Treat yo' self!!!) It's the best day of the year. That was from Parks and Recreation (and if you didn't know that, you should be ashamed of yourself!) To me, Treat Yo' Self is not just a fun story line where Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari) turns himself into a cashmere-velvet candy cane. No, it is the most important axiom of my mental health. Because what is Treat Yo' Self other than a better way of saying self-care? Today's blog is a shortie because that's exactly what I am doing right now. I am treating myself some well-deserved self-care. My way, however, isn't Haverford-Meagle way. It doesn't really have to be. It doesn't have to come in the form of massages, mimosas or fiiiiiine leather goods. Everyone's way of self-care is different. In the Parks and Rec episode, Tom and Donna invited Ben along because he'd been down lately and needed a pick me up. The two went to town with their luxury items extravaganza while Ben just bought socks. Because you know what? He wasn't a luxe goods type of guy. That wasn't what made him happy... until he thought of something much better, at least. Some people like curling up to a good book with a box of chocolate beside them. Some people like doing 50 laps at the pool and going to the sauna after. Some people like making 20 jars of jam and finishing off what's left in the pot with a nice slice of toast. Some people like putting blankets in the dryer for 5 minutes and wrapping themselves in it while watching all the seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race nonstop, back-to-back. And why the hell not? Tonight, I treated myself to letting a friend cook dinner for me while she listened as I talked about things that I'd been anxious about lately. May not appeal to a lot of people, but right now, it was just what I needed. Our ways of self-care are almost like fingerprints. Some may look similar but each are individual to our needs and the needs of the moment. Your self-care is whatever helps you stay grounded, happy, and positive. Your self-care is whatever you need... or want, depending on whether or not it's a choice between white socks and a Batman suit.
Book, swimming, jam, drag queens, comically impractical comic book-related purchases... it's all good. Keep yourself happy. Because like Ben...
