From Eris Young
The last year has been a funny one for me. I’ve never really been a very outgoing person, and it’s only since I’ve found what I think of as my ‘calling’ (writing) and begun to work towards that as a career, that I’ve had reason to push myself into unfamiliar situations: workshops, talks, live readings, socials. When I was younger, I realise now that I also used money as an excuse. It’s not that I was in the wrong to say, no, that concert or this exhibition or even just going out is too expensive, but that now I’ve got a stable income and can no longer use that excuse that I realise what I was doing. That I felt a tiny bit of relief if my friend didn’t offer to pay for me or suggest a cheaper alternative.

It’s National Poetry Day today, so Rita and I decided this was a serendipitous day to announce the lineup to our Dear Diary event. We have a huge number of writers, poets and storytellers and are so excited to share them with you. So much talent in one night - can you afford to be square enough to miss it? In no particular order:

I was recently asked to speak at Magfest about Marbles, why I started the magazine, and what I wanted to achieve with it. When I stopped feeling like I was going to be sick every time I thought about speaking in front of magazine luminaries, I had a good think and realised there was one particular reason I started it – a conversation I had earlier in the year. It really got things going and sparked in me an ethos I hope I can always have with me. Because everything is hectic and frantic and other words ending with ‘-ic’ right now, my blog today is my Magfest speech, explaining why I started Marbles and why I think it’s important. from Rita
